An Implant Retained Denture is a denture that rests on implants that are placed into the bone in your gumline for extra support. The procedure to place implants takes place at a dental office or oral surgeon and generally performed under local anaesthesia. A relatively painless procedure. Once the bone has fully healed around these implants the patient has a denture that snaps into place improving the function, comfort and stability. Even with some bone loss in your upper area the base is spread across the whole palate and patients generally find their retention in an upper denture remains good and do not require Implants. Unfortunately the reality is that we do not get suction in our lower mouth. You will likely get food in your lower denture and be able to lift it and move it with the movement of your tongue from time to time. With a lower denture due to excessive shrinkage of the bone you may also struggle with comfort and stability. If you have issues with support on your upper or lower denture that’s where Dental implants come in.
